Walking the path of the Kall trail on an early morning solo run was an immersive experience, where the serene beauty of nature belied the horrors that once unfolded here. Over 6,000 U.S. soldiers lost their lives along this trail in a few days, their bravery immortalized in the silent whispers of the forest. Among the towering trees, remnants of tanks still lay scattered, silent witnesses to the fierce battles that raged decades ago.

The museum at Hurtgen provided invaluable insights into the human cost of war, with exhibits detailing the harrowing tales of those who lived and died in this forest. Poor U.S. leadership, characterized by tactical errors and inadequate preparation, cost countless lives unnecessarily. It's a sobering reminder of the human cost of war and the responsibility that leaders bear for the lives entrusted to them.
