The University Grants Commission (UGC) is embroiled in fresh controversy over its recently notified 'Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations-2026'. Students, particularly from the general category, have taken to the streets in Delhi and other cities across the country, alleging that the new rules compromise their rights and opportunities. Protesters claim the regulations make them feel "insecure" and accuse the central government of eroding their rights. Opposition parties have cautiously voiced support for the protests. In response, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has asserted that the guidelines will not lead to discrimination against anyone and that protections for all, as per the Constitution, will be upheld.
