📖 Birth and Blessing

Markandeya was born to sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati after years of penance. They were given a divine choice by Lord Shiva — either a brilliant son with a short lifespan (16 years) or a dull son with a long life. They chose the brilliant child, and Markandeya was born.

🔱 Victory Over Death

As Markandeya approached the age of 16, he devoted himself completely to worshipping Lord Shiva. When Yama, the god of death, came to take his life, Markandeya hugged the Shiva Lingam and prayed with total surrender.

Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, stopped Yama, and granted Markandeya immortality (Chiranjivi status). Because of this event, Lord Shiva is also worshipped as Kalantaka — the destroyer of death.

🌊 Vision of the Universe

Another famous legend describes Markandeya witnessing the cosmic dissolution (Pralaya), where he saw the entire universe submerged in water and had divine visions of creation and destruction — symbolizing spiritual knowledge beyond time.
