Learning objectives include:
1. Review the anatomic and physiological differences in pediatric bone development, including the role of growth plates, ossification centers, and remodeling potential in guiding pediatric injury management.
2. Recognize and differentiate common pediatric elbow injuries.
3. Demonstrate and document a thorough neurovascular examination in pediatric elbow trauma, specifically assessing radial pulses, capillary refill, motor/sensory function of radial, median, and ulnar nerves, and identify red flags requiring emergent orthopedic intervention.
4. Apply evidence-based reduction and immobilization techniques appropriate to specific fracture patterns and injury types.
5. Identify red flags and indications for urgent/emergent orthopedic referral to distinguish between injuries manageable in primary care versus those requiring specialist evaluation.
6. Recognize common pediatric shoulder injuries, including clavicle fractures, proximal humerus fractures, anterior shoulder dislocations, and Little League shoulder.
7. Apply overuse injury prevention counseling to young athletes, including guidance on pitch counts, workload management, and activity modification.
