In this video we visit Waverley Abbey.
Founded in 1128 by William Gifford, Bishop of Winchester, It started with 12 monks one abbot from France.
Due to serious flooding in 1201 and at other times prior to that, the abbey was rebuilt during the 13th century.
It got larger in the 14th century and the adjacent land was farmed. They produced wool, gave shelter for pilgrims and travelers and was a hospital for the sick.
In 1536, Henry VIII disbanded Monasteries, so Waverley Abbey was passed to the treasures of the king's household, Sir William Fitzherbert.
Most of the abbey was dismantled and some of the stone was used to build Sir William More's house at Loseley.
