Jervaulx Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery located in the Vale of Ure, North Yorkshire, England, near the Yorkshire Dales.
Founded in 1156, it was one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire.
The ruins are extensive and set in a picturesque, tranquil landscape, known for being allowed to flourish with wildflowers, shrubs, and trees within its walls, creating a romantic garden atmosphere.
The abbey was renowned in its time for breeding horses and was the original home of Wensleydale cheese.
It was dissolved in 1537 by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, leading to its destruction and ruination.
Unlike many other monastic sites, it is privately owned and maintained by the family on the estate, relying on visitor contributions for its upkeep.
