ABOUT THE COURSE
What is helicopter money? How is it different from quantitative easing (QE)? What is it that central banks promise to the pay the bearer of a currency note? How did the US Federal Reserve bailout banks during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008? Did they use taxpayers’ money? Should the Indian government adhere to a fiscal deficit of 3% of GDP? Is Spain or Italy economically sovereign, like Australia or Japan? Will our grandchildren bear the burden of public debt?
This course will help you in articulating answers to these and many more macroeconomic questions that have come to dominate the media post-2008 and during the 2020 pandemic. Unfortunately, mainstream macroeconomic analysis completely circumvents the notion of modern money and modern monetary institutions. It is no wonder then that students often find their (macro)economics courses “theoretical” and disjointed from the “real world”.
Based on the tenets of Modern Money Theory (MMT), this course will provide a clear lens through which you can understand the actual functioning of the modern monetary system and engage in contemporary macroeconomic debates … with a sense of confidence and a firm grasp over the subject. The contents of the course are drawn on the work of several MMT economists who have, over the years, shared their work through blogs, videos and open-access papers.
The course will be delivered primarily through approx. 23 hours of video lectures along with essential readings. The lectures are self-contained. This is a no-frills course. No flashy animations or graphics. A more traditional teaching methodology has been adopted. To get the most of the course, you must grind through the content with paper and pen. The content needs to be supplemented with readings as well as by critically engaging with contemporary macroeconomic issues discussed in newspapers, magazines and online sources.
Although the content is not mathematical and is at the introductory level, it is rigorous. I have also spent more time on the topics, which I had to spend more time on to get a firm grip over the arguments in my own journey of learning MMT.
