Huaihai Road is a famous commercial street in the center of Shanghai, with many upscale shopping malls, offices and hotels, but also retains many historical buildings.
Huaihai Road is divided into three sections: Huaihai East Road, Huaihai Middle Road, and Huaihai West Road, and the section we are walking on today is part of East Road and Middle Road.
Originally named Xijiang Road, Huaihai Zhong Road was built by the French Concession Bureau and was later renamed Route Paul Brunat in 1906. In 1908, the French tramway company opened a tramway from Xixi Shop to Xujiahui via Gongguan Road and Baochang Road, and the number of residents increased due to the convenient transportation.
From 1914 to 1930, Xiafei Road was rapidly developed commercially and became a prosperous commercial street in Shanghai. After the outbreak of the Pacific War, business declined, and after 1949, a large number of foreign investors left and the street was closed down. After the 1980s, Huaihai Road was developed again and restored to its former commercial prosperity.
