Join PPLD Local History Librarian Kira Thompson as we explore the centuries-old history of Poughkeepsie’s waterfront area. From transportation to commerce to recreation, the waterfront’s geography and relationship to Poughkeepsie has been ever-changing, but it remains a vital part of the city. In this talk, we will use maps and other primary source materials from our collection to explore what once resided along the Hudson, from the time of the first colonial settlers to the dawn of the 20th century.
Kira Thompson is a Hudson Valley native and the head of Local History & Adult Services at the Poughkeepsie Public Library District. Kira has a bachelor's degree from NYU and a Masters of Library & Information Science from LSU. She has been employed at PPLD for over 12 years; the head of Local History since 2016, and has been the department head for Adult Services since March of 2021. Her passion for local history can be credited to her parents, who, though not Hudson Valley natives themselves, embraced and passed on the history of their adopted region after attending SUNY New Paltz in the 1970’s, and staying to raise their family in Ulster County. Kira currently lives in the city of Poughkeepsie with her brown tabby, Eliza.
