Hey! I saw a yellow bird! Could it have been this week’s #BirdOfTheWeek, the Wilson’s warbler? Wilson’s warblers are small yellow birds that belt their sweet chattering song from the understory of alder and willow thickets, often near water. Wilson’s warblers can be found in the Puget Sound area spring through fall after they migrate from Central America and Mexico. Interestingly, they often make their nest on the ground near the base of a tree, shrub, or dense clump of grass.
Males have a black cap, while females and immatures have an olive crown and sometimes a small black cap. As one of the smallest warblers in the US, they can be challenging to see as they constantly dash between shrubs grabbing insects in their small bill. Unlike other warblers, they tend to forage much closer to the ground which makes seeing them much easier. Happy birding!
Stay tuned at the end of the video to watch the bird sing!
