Tom Spellman demonstrates several planting tips for a multi-budded, also known as multi-grafted, fruit tree at the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. Planting a multi-budded fruit tree can be an exciting and rewarding project that allows gardeners to grow multiple fruit varieties on a single tree—an ideal solution for backyard gardeners with limited space or those aiming to achieve high-density, successive ripening fruits for a longer growing season. This technique involves grafting different fruit types, such as peaches, plums, apricots, and cherries, onto a single rootstock, creating a diverse and compact fruit-bearing tree. The process begins with selecting a suitable rootstock that will support all the grafts and preparing each scion (the branch of a different variety to be grafted) carefully. After the grafts are made, the tree must be properly watered and cared for to ensure successful healing and growth. Over time, the tree will bear an array of different fruits, offering a unique, space-saving solution for home orchards.
