In this video we’ll look at the key ideas and assumptions for Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). Visit https://www.Breslyn.org for more Gas Laws help and practice!
These key concepts and assumptions of KMT form the basis for the common exam questions. They are also at the heart of the gas law equations like the Combined Gas Law and the Ideal Gas Law.
For Kinetic Molecular Theory there are five main assumptions:
Simulation App at:
https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/g...
1. Constant Random Motion: We'll take a closer look at the foundational assumption of constant random motion, where gas particles engage in continuous, random movement.
2. Negligible Particle Volume: We'll consider the significance of the assumption that gas particles have negligible volume. This assumption holds under normal conditions but has limitations at high pressures where the particles occupy more of the space in the container.
3. Attractive Forces: Next we look at the assumption that there are no attractive forces between gas particles. This assumption also has limitations and may face challenges at higher pressures and lower temperatures, due to the role of intermolecular forces in specific gas behaviors.
4. Elastic Collisions: An important assumption of KMT is the the concept of perfectly elastic collisions between gas molecules. We’ll discuss how this assumption helps in explaining energy transfer during collisions.
5. Kinetic Energy Proportional to Temperature: The final assumption we’ll look at is that kinetic energy is directly proportional to temperature. This relationship establishes a key connection between macroscopic gas properties and the microscopic world of individual gas particles.
The goal is to provide a balanced understanding of where KMT works well and where it faces challenges.
