The US Navy's Zumwalt class destroyers (DDG-1000) were designed and built for naval gunfire support and littoral warfare, under the overarching assumption of American naval supremacy and firepower superiority. However, with the rise of peer naval powers over the past two decades, the Zumwalt is being repurposed for another mission: high-end naval warfare using hypersonic missiles.
