Emily Buehler is an assistant professor in the Brian Lamb School of Communication in Purdue University’s College of Liberal Arts. In this video, she discusses what people should consider when searching for online support during stressful times. Buehler says that if people are stressed or uncertain, they should determine what kind of support they want. One way to give or receive social support is through online media such as texting, video chat, social media and other online forums. Buehler says anonymity, visibility and social presence affect how people ask for and receive support. Being anonymous online can help people open up in ways they wouldn’t in a public setting. Creating an online post can mean visibility and the potential to reach a large number of people, but it can also expose people to unwanted judgment. Online support may also fall short if someone is looking for an in-person connection.
