This is a video by Satyendra Kumar Sarmah on the 'Bhuyans'or Bar-bhuyans" of Assam in medieval Assam history. The. word Bhuyan means a landlord synonymous with the Persian 'Zamindar' and Sanskrit'Bhaumika'. The Bhuyans did not have any ethnic basis. Most of the Bhuyans in Assam were Kayasthas, Daivagna and Brahmanas. The tradition of Bar-bhuyans is common in both Bengal and Assam.
The Bhuyans made valuable contributions to Assamese culture and civilization. Sankardeva, the great religious reformer of Assam was also originally a Bhuyan. Bhuyans were also reputed scholars, traders and advanced agriculturist. Again, Bhuyans had successfully registered the early Muslim invasions into the north-east.
