🏙️ THE FORBIDDEN CITY IN CONTEXT:
Built between 1406 and 1420 under the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, the Forbidden City served as the imperial palace of China for nearly 500 years across 24 emperors. Its name comes from the fact that no one could enter or leave without the emperor's permission. Today it houses the Palace Museum - one of the world's largest art collections with over 1.8 million artifacts - and receives over 19 million visitors annually, making it the world's most visited museum. Walking its courtyards is a rare encounter with a place where virtually every stone and beam has remained untouched for 600 years.
