Let's begin to separate the facts from myths about Self-Awareness with Healthy Minds!
"Become Self Aware" is a framework of tools and techniques to help you understand your mind and reprogram your mind’s response to unhelpful thoughts. These tools are rooted in fields like psychology and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and used by the world’s leading mental health professionals.
Audio Description:
There’s no shortage of literature about self-awareness, and there are more than a few misconceptions about the practice. Let’s clear up such myths or wrong notions about mindfulness or mental health.
Myth #1- Taking time to get to know myself is selfish
I understand how things might seem this way, but let’s take a closer look. Just think of the last time you were well-nourished and supported, how did it impact the way you looked at – and related to – others?
Investing in your health and well-being, whether that means setting aside time to journal about your day or practice mindfulness techniques, is one of the greatest ways to honour your needs and show respect for yourself.
As you prioritize your needs, everyone around you will benefit. Keep in mind, I’m not suggesting that you focus on yourself all the time! That’s the difference between self-awareness and self-absorption.
It’s crucial to take breaks from an internal focus. Making a point to connect to your environment and the people around you is an awesome counterbalance to building self-awareness.
Myth #2- I am my thoughts
Contrary to the usual belief, you are not your thoughts. At least not in its entirety. We have the habit of looking at the world FROM OUR THOUGHTS. As soon as we have a thought, we immediately think, “OK. What does this thought say about me, the world, my past and my future.” That’s how we develop opinions.
Every day, we have thousands of thoughts, feelings, emotions and urges. Sometimes we don’t even realise we are thinking. We seem to be swimming in a sea of our thoughts. But thoughts are not facts and they are not always true. Even when they seem to be. You should try to look at your thoughts with curiosity and not judgement.
Some of your thoughts might be unwanted. But instead of reacting to your thoughts, notice your body sensations and emotions when you have such thoughts. Observing your thoughts is a skill that needs practice.
Like waves in an ocean, thoughts are always passing through our minds. But they are not “us”. And we are not our thoughts. Becoming aware of our thoughts and developing ways to respond to our thoughts gives us more choice than to react to our thoughts in ways we may regret.
Myth #3- Getting to know myself is uninteresting
There’s a difference between being slow and being relaxed. It may seem like getting to know yourself isn’t as exciting as, let’s say, going for a hike or meeting friends for dinner.
But the cool thing is, knowing more about yourself can add ease and enjoyment to your experience of virtually everything you do. For example, if you know you tend to get anxious in certain social situations, you can mindfully reflect on ways to create a feeling of ease or support.
