Today we’re going to talk about using AMACO dipping glazes.

Amaco glazes in jars are formulated to be brushed on your ceramic ware, but if you are applying glaze to a large number of pieces, that takes a lot of time and many jars of glaze.

Our dry glazes are a faster option for glazing a lot of ware. Mix dry glazes with water in your own studio. They can be applied by dipping or pouring.

To get the best results from dipping or pouring our dry glazes, we have the following recommendations:


Dipping glazes are formulated to be used on bisque.

Clean your bisque with a damp sponge before glazing.

Always test your glaze before using on a whole kiln load of ware.

Test dipping to make sure you have the thickness you desire.

Differences in clay body, thickness of ware, and the temperature to which ware was bisqued can lead to inconsistent results.

Mix your glaze thoroughly immediately before dipping. If you are glazing more than one piece give your glaze a stir between pieces.

The minerals in glaze settle and stratify faster than you may realize, leaving you with uneven glaze application.

When dipping, keep track of your time. Some glazes require a shorter or longer time in the glaze bucket, and the thickness or vitrification of your bisque can affect the length of time to get the correct thickness of glaze. Generally a dip of 3 seconds works best.

Test to find out what time span works best for your clay body and firing cycle.
