While Illinois makes strides toward a clean energy future, there is a glaring gap in the plan — rural electric cooperatives and municipal electric utilities. Hundreds of these communities are still tied to one of the largest coal polluters in the country.
The Prairie State Coal plant is a titan of pollution, from pumping out 12 million tons of heat trapping CO2 to producing 20 million cubic yards (and counting) of toxic coal ash waste. This dirty coal is how thousands of families get electricity.
Prairie State is owned by nine public power agencies serving 277 municipal utilities and rural electric cooperatives across eight states. Back in 2007, these communities took on massive debt to finance the plant’s construction.
Today many of these communities are still locked in to contracts with our biggest polluter, but Prairie Rivers Network is working to change the narrative and give these communities the power to decide their energy future.
The fate of Prairie State isn’t just about one coal plant - it’s about enabling a just and equitable clean energy transition for communities across the Midwest.
