जब आदि शंकराचार्य बालक थे, तब वे एक अत्यंत निर्धन महिला के द्वार पर भिक्षा माँगने पहुँचे। वह महिला इतनी गरीब थी कि उसके घर में अन्न का एक दाना भी नहीं था। काफी खोजने के बाद उसे केवल एक सूखा आँवला मिला। अपनी दरिद्रता पर दुखी होते हुए भी, उसने पूरी श्रद्धा के साथ वह अंतिम आँवला बालक शंकर की झोली में डाल दिया।

उस महिला की निस्वार्थ भक्ति देखकर शंकराचार्य का हृदय पिघल गया। उन्होंने उसी क्षण माँ लक्ष्मी की स्तुति में २१ श्लोकों की रचना कर डाली। उनकी स्तुति और महिला की करुणा से प्रसन्न होकर माँ लक्ष्मी प्रकट हुईं और उस घर में सोने के आँवलों की वर्षा कर दी।

The Story: As a young boy, Adi Shankaracharya went to a poor woman's house for Bhiksha (alms). The woman was so destitute that she had absolutely nothing to give. After searching her entire house, she found a single, shriveled Amla (Gooseberry). With tears in her eyes and immense devotion, she offered that last bit of food to the young monk.

Deeply moved by her selflessness, Shankaracharya composed 21 verses on the spot, pleading with Goddess Lakshmi to end the woman’s poverty. Touched by the beauty of the verses and the woman’s pure heart, Goddess Lakshmi showered the house with Golden Amlas.
