Bergamo, Città Alta - Italy Walking Tour

Описание: Come walking with me around the upper, older part of Bergamo, a beautiful medieval town often underrated.
Bergamo is located in Lombardy to the east of northern Italy’s big hitters, Milan and Lake Como.
There are two Bergamo: the modern “Lower City” and the old “Upper Town” (the "Città Alta"), which is where most of the tourist attractions are found.
The contrast between the modern lower Bergamo, laying on a plain, and the old town Bergamo, sitting on a steep hill, is striking. The Venetian walls and their four monumental entrance gates divide the two parts of the city, which are connected by a funicular, but I decided to brave one of the old citadel steep, winding roads.
The monumental gates through which these roads enter the old city are worth a look. Two of them show the Lion of St. Mark, a reminder that Bergamo, like much of northern Italy, was once part of the Venetian Republic.
The old town's narrow, charming cobblestone streets wind among medieval and Renaissance buildings.
Let your eyes wander around the pretty shops, the ancient bakeries and the old signs.
The heart of Bergamo is the Piazza Vecchia, framed by the white classical Palazzo Nuovo, the medieval Palazzo della Ragione, the bell tower (also called Campanone) and, at the center of the square, you'll find the Contarini fountain.
Walking under the arches of the Palazzo della Ragione you'll reach the small Piazza Duomo, with the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel, the Duomo and the baphtistery.
