Replacement of the starter motor on a 2nd generation 350ci small block 5.7L Vortec V8 due to a problem with click but no crank condition. The procedure is illustrated on a 1998 Chevrolet Cheyenne K2500 pickup, but the approach is the same for any 5.7L V8 (aka Vortec 5700) and very similar for the related 4.3L V6 and 5.0L 6.5L and 7.4L V8 engine displacements from the 90s as well (said engines found on old body style (OBS) C and K trucks, as well as G vans. We will be actually installing the ACDelco 323-485 starter for the 5.7L. But I provide GM ACDelco part numbers for all Vortec and 6.5L diesel engines below.
You will need 15mm, 13mm, and 8mm sockets to perform this repair. Before replacing the starter motor, be sure to verify that your battery is not at fault, and that your battery cables are not at fault. This is also a good time to clean battery terminals and battery cable connections of corrosion.
