How To Fix BIKE CHAIN SKIPPING SLIPPING JUMPING GEARS When Pedaling

THREE OTHER CAUSES OF YOUR BIKE SKIPPING, SLIPPING and JUMPING GEARS

1️⃣ If your bike is skipping when it's ONLY on the smallest rear cog and you know for sure that you have ridden thousands of miles, the skipping is usually caused by that cog being worn out. Sometimes you can buy that 1 cog and replace it to fix the problem (a few special bike tools are needed). If the cog isn't available for your freewheel or cassette, then the solution is to replace the entire freewheel or cassette to stop the skipping.

2️⃣ If your bike is skipping on just a few gears, look closely for hair or thread or fishing line or mud or gunk that somehow got stuck in between the cogs. That will prevent the chain from seating on the teeth and it'll skip. Fix it by cleaning the crud out from between the gears with a screwdriver or awl, whatever it takes.

3️⃣ If your bike is skipping on just one gear/cog, another possibility is a bent tooth on that cog. To spot this you have to look closely as some teeth may be made a different shape and angle than the other teeth on a cog. What you are looking for is a tooth that looks obviously bent too far and you'll spot it if it's bent and when you backpedal the chain gets tripped up by the bent tooth. To fix this you need to gently straighten the tooth until the chain doesn't skip on it anymore. Do this slowly and gently or else you might break off that one tooth. The gear might still work since there are enough other teeth but it might not too, so it's best to try not to break it when straightening it.
