Ginger, a spicy herb native to southeastern Asia, is an important cash crop for about 10,000 smallholder farmers in southern Shan State, Myanmar. With support from USAID’s Value Chains for Rural Development project, farmers in Shan are exploring new ways to grow this valuable crop, including learning how to grow bigger, healthier ginger roots without using chemical herbicides or pesticides. Ginger farmers also are also now linked directly to processors and exporters who have begun buying directly from Myanmar smallholders growing higher-quality, pesticide-free ginger to meet growing demand from the growing global market. In this video, you’ll meet some of Myanmar’s smallholder ginger farmers and community extension leaders who are adopting improved farming methods and technologies including natural fertilizers, contour planting, intercropping and mulching to help prevent erosion, protect soil health, and reduce unnecessary use of chemical inputs, with the goal of increasing incomes and sustainably improving rural livelihoods. USAID’s Value Chains project, implemented by Winrock International, uses a market systems approach to integrate smallholders and rural households into competitive commercial value chains to increase productivity and achieve inclusive agricultural growth. The project is part of Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global food security initiative.
