Alphabet-owned Waymo announced that its latest "generation 6" self-driving technology, integrated into Geely Zeekr electric vehicles, will handle a broader range of weather conditions while using fewer expensive cameras and sensors.
Waymo has reduced the number of onboard cameras from 29 to 13 and lidar sensors from five to four to lower costs.
Alphabet recently invested an additional $5 billion in its autonomous vehicle unit, originally started as "project chauffeur" at Google in 2009.
Satish Jeyachandran, Waymo's vice president, stated that Waymo's Jaguar I-PACE and Geely Zeekr vehicles will "coexist."
The new Waymo-Zeekr is a boxier vehicle with a similar footprint to the Waymo I-Pace SUVs but offers a more accessible interior, featuring a low step, high ceiling, and increased legroom.
