I would also like to take the time to recognize Yingzhen Zeng. She has been one of my biggest supporters. This summer she played on my piece FIRE STORM at Brevard Music Festival New Music Concert. Your support has meant the world to me and I am so excited to watch how you change the world with your consistent hard work, dedication, and musicality.

I also want to take the time to thank Jin Jeong for accompanying Nyla at the Seen and Herd: A Tuba Studio Performance in the Boston University Booth Theater Lobby on May 2, 2025. I also would like to thank Mitch Brady for organizing this event. It was such a learning experience for me to hear all this tuba repertoire and a great place to meet your studio of incredible tubists and euphoniumists!

Lastly, I would like to thank Hyeongrin Ryu for playing my piece at Nyla’s senior recital.

Tubista is meant to add an -a to the word “tubist” as a way to represent women tuba players. Even more, the way to say “tubist” in Spanish is “tubista,” which I thought was perfect since this piece is meant to empower women tubists and composers to continue pursuing their passion despite the unique struggles we face. Together we are changing this industry to become a place where women can be respected and seen as the individuals we are.

Nyla’s senior recital was an incredible experience; she was supporting and promoting the music of women composers, and I am so lucky to have been one of them! I never knew the experiences as a woman in the tuba world could yield so many similarities to being a woman in the composition world, especially in the challenges we face being a minority. I am so excited to see the impact Nyla will make in both the tuba and composition world.
