Joe took Jill and I from Trail Lakes Campground to the Big Cypress Swamp Visitor Center to start our hike. This is the Southern Terminus (start) of the Florida Trail. We met about 8 other hikers starting their hike as well, including some attempting a thru hike. All had 10-Mile camp as their destination for day 1. I met Captain Glenn, who I had some FB communication with in the FT Thru Hiker FB group. This was a major test for my foot, only 6 weeks after surgery. In the 9.5 miles, approximately 1/3 was wading thru swamp, 1/3 mud, and 1/3 very soft Trail. Our feet were soaked with water, sand, and mud. It was a very tough Day 1.
Day 2: The Swamp water was more prevalent today as well as mud. Pine Island had no obvious camp spots so we setup tents on high grass. We did miss a turn for the trail from a short walk on a Swamp wagon road and had to bushwhack about 75 yds to find it. Others missed it too.
Day 3: Hardest of the 3 days by far! The entire day was in water or deep mud. Hiked with Wonder Woman, Hopper (Jill), Trout, and Polar Bear. Ran across Sodapop coming back north. We left Wonder Woman at Thank God Island and finished Big Cypress in the dark around 11 pm. We drove Trout & Polar Bear to their car at the Southern Terminus then drove to Naples and stayed at a Hampton Inn.
