The refit of the Constitution class produced perhaps one of the most iconic designs in all of science fiction. The Constitution refit of the 2270s was a major leap forward for the capabilities of the class as a whole allowing it to remain competitive for the final quarter of the 23rd century in an environment which had changed rapidly since the initial introduction of the ships.
But what exactly did the refit accomplish? Why was it necessary? And how significant were the changes made to the ships original design? All these questions will be answered with headcanon and examples from the real world to help inform the decision eventually reached.
