The F-35B Lightning II is the centerpiece of modern Marine Corps aviation. It is a fifth-generation stealth fighter specifically designed for Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL), allowing it to operate from amphibious assault ships (LHA/LHD) and austere, "unimproved" runways where traditional jets cannot land.
As of late 2025, the F-35B is being heavily utilized in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East as the Marines phase out the older AV-8B Harrier and F/A-18 Hornet.
USS Tripoli (LHA 7) is the second America-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy. As of late 2025, she serves as the primary forward-deployed big-deck amphibious warship in the Indo-Pacific, having replaced the USS America (LHA 6) in Japan.
