'La Ora Na TAHITI - The gateway to French Polynesia
We chose to stay in Pa'ea on the south east of the island, a lovely quiet area in the heart of local life with stunning tranquil shallow bays protected by the far reef.
A hire car is essential and an affordable way to explore all that Tahiti has to offer. There is one main road around the island which is 72 miles long however, allow plenty of time (at least 6 hours) to enjoy the many beautiful stops and highlights along the way.
HIGHLIGHTS;
Papeete - The only city on the island. Explore its markets, exquisite pearls, harbour front and loose a few hours watching the locals in a cafe &/or restaurant.
Pointe Venus - A beautiful old lighthouse, black sand beach (hot HOT sand - wear shoes!), whales breaching in the distance, stingrays gently floating in the bay, snorkelling in amongst the tropical crystal clear waters. Our favourite place.
3 Cascades - Striking waterfall with picturesque short trail. Unfortunately no swimming in the pools as they are classed as sacred to the locals.
Grotto De Mara'a - 3 caves, first one you can swim in the turquoise cool waters for a unique, slightly eerie experience if headed for the back of the cave in amongst the numerous tropical fish.
Teahupoo - 2024 Olympic Surf Venue. To be honest not much happening here but still lovely to see the biggest waves breaking off the reef in the distance.
Source De Vaima - Sacred river source with the most pristine waters treasured by the locals. Great place to immerse yourself in Tahitian life and talk to the locals. Be sure to look for the huge river eels!
Mahana Park - The most beautiful beach and INCREDIBLE snorkelling in crystal clear waters. Beware of the strong current when swimming with kids.
FOOD & DRINK:
Urban Cafe - Papeete. Tremendous brunch offering, would highly recommend the French toast and pancakes. Pool table and games for the kids in a covered outdoor area.

Mahana Park - Hearty local feed, after a big swim this was very much appreciated. Popular local spot at the weekend. There was a large celebration happening when we were there, lovely to be a part of!

Next stop the tropical paradise of Moorea (which we are SO UNBELIEVEABLY excited about!)
