April 13th, 1945. Nightfall. Zwolle, Netherlands.

The artillery was ready. At dawn, the city was supposed to be erased to save advancing Allied troops. Inside were over 1,500 German soldiers — Wehrmacht and SS — ordered to fight to the last bullet.

But one man crossed the line before the guns could fire.

Leo Major. One eye. A shattered back. No squad. No backup.

What followed was four hours of controlled chaos.
Grenades echoing through empty streets.
Machine-gun bursts from impossible directions.
Patrols disappearing into the dark.
Panic spreading block by block.

Major captured enemy soldiers, marched them out of the city — then went back in. Again. And again. He burned Gestapo headquarters, ambushed SS units, and convinced the enemy command they were already surrounded.

By morning, the Germans were gone.

Zwolle still stood.

The city wasn’t saved by an army.
It wasn’t saved by tanks or air power.
It was saved by one man who refused to turn back.

Leo Major would later become the only Canadian soldier in history to receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice, in two different wars.
