The Elves and the Shoemaker
Once upon a time, there lived a kind and honest shoemaker who had fallen on hard times. Though he worked diligently, he grew poorer and poorer, until at last, he had barely enough leather left to make just one last pair of shoes.
That evening, he carefully cut out the leather pieces for the final pair. His heart was heavy, but his conscience was clear, and trusting in God, he laid the cut pieces on his workbench and went to bed, planning to start his work early the next morning.
The following day, after saying his morning prayers, he went into his workshop. But he stopped short in astonishment! There, on his workbench, sat a pair of shoes, already made, and so perfectly stitched and polished that they were the finest he had ever seen. There was not a single bad stitch in the entire pair.
A customer soon came into the shop and was so delighted with the flawless shoes that he immediately bought them for a much higher price than the shoemaker had asked. With this money, the shoemaker bought enough leather to make two new pairs of shoes.
That evening, he carefully cut out the leather for the two pairs and, just as before, laid the pieces on his workbench before going to bed.
In the morning, the two pairs of shoes were finished and stood upon the table, even more beautiful than the last. Customers flocked to the shop and paid an excellent price for them.
This wondrous event continued night after night. Whatever leather the good man cut out and left on his bench in the evening, he found perfectly finished by the time he awoke. Soon, the honest shoemaker and his wife were no longer poor; in fact, they became quite prosperous.
One evening, shortly before Christmas, the shoemaker said to his wife, "We must find out who is giving us this wonderful helping hand. What do you say to staying up tonight to watch?" His wife agreed.
They lit a small candle, hid themselves in a dark corner of the workshop behind some clothes, and waited.
As soon as the clock struck midnight, they heard a sound. In came two tiny, naked little men, who jumped up onto the workbench. They took up the cut leather pieces and, with their tiny fingers, began to stitch, sew, and hammer with unbelievable speed and skill. They did not stop for a moment until all the work was done and the beautiful shoes stood finished on the table. Then, they quickly ran away.
The next morning, the shoemaker's wife said, "The little men have made us rich. We must show them our gratitude. They run about with nothing on and must be freezing. I will knit two little shirts, two coats, two pairs of breeches, and two hats for them, and you, dear husband, can make them two little pairs of shoes."
The shoemaker gladly agreed. They worked all day until the tiny outfits were complete.
That evening, instead of leaving cut leather on the workbench, they laid out the pretty little clothes and tiny shoes. Then, they hid again to watch.
At midnight, the little elves came bounding in, ready to work. When they saw the clothes, they were at first astonished, then they burst into happy laughter. They quickly dressed themselves, admired their new clothes, and began to leap and dance with glee
They skipped and danced all around the chairs and tables, and at last, they danced right out the door and into the night.
The good couple never saw the little elves again, but because of the kindness they had shown and the elves' prior help, everything went well for the shoemaker and his wife for the rest of their lives, and they prospered in all that they did.
