The monsoon has taken a huge mid-season break of about 22 days, making this August the driest in 123 years. Till August 29, countrywide rainfall stood at just 160.3 mm, compared to an average of 241 mm. In fact, the rain deficit is August is so large that we now have a 9% overall deficit for the monsoon season that spans from June to September. This means India could be staring at a deficient monsoon season, which would have terrible implications for the agri sector, and consequently for India’s economy. Rain deficit of 10% is classified as a rain deficit year. To put the poor rainfall in August this year in perspective, this will be only the second time in 105 years that the monsoon in July or August will be 30% or more below normal.
