Green Screen Paint - DIY vs Professional - which one for your chroma key background - Rosco & Dulux

Its not just the colour of the green that is important, to get the best performance out of your green screen you need the most evenly lit chroma key background that you can get and the type of paint you use can make quite a difference if you want to get the best results.

Before I did this I like many people thought that any bright green paint would do and that's what i used but I soon found that it was not as good as I thought.

Even though it was a matt finish it still had a slight sheen, this is when I found the Rosco paint which was the cheapest Pro paint I could find.

There is a definite difference which you can see when you compare the two in real life and it's NOT the colour difference.

The Rosco paint is flatter, more matt than the DIY with no sheen no matter how you light it and that's the key to excuse the pun. The Pro paint does not show highlights (brighter looking greens to the keying software) like the DIY does.

For small studios with a flat background there is not a lot of difference but as soon as you start having infinity curves, objects that need to be painted to be keyed out etc then the Pro paint is just better and there is not a lot of difference in the price here in the UK though in the US that might be different.

In this video I look at the difference between a mix and match DIY paint from Dulux and a professional chroma key green paint from Rosco.

Comparing the levels with the waveform monitor in Adobe Premier and some tweaking of levels and curves in Adobe After Effects shows what the eye cant see by just looking at the paint alone.

I'm not sponsored by Rosco or Dulux and bought both paints with my own money.

Both paints were applied directly to the white foam board with non primer.

3 coats of paint were applied with a roller and no special methods used during the painting just letting it dry between coats.
