“Serving as Winnipeg’s 43rd Mayor continues to be a tremendous honour and responsibility. That’s why my family and I were deeply humbled by our election victory in 2014 and strengthened re-election mandate in 2018.

That re-election victory was 2 years ago this week. And so, with the next municipal election now two years out on October 26, 2022, I want to be open with Winnipeggers about my personal plans for the future, plans that do not include a career in elected office, plans that do not include running again for re-election as Mayor.

In my view, Manitoba has far too many career politicians. I won’t be one of them.

For my remaining two years in office, I’ll continue to focus on building a community we can all be proud to call home. And for each and every day over the next two years I’ll continue to work with the energy and commitment expected of our city’s leader, and in the best interests of our residents rather than the best interests of re-election.

Who serves as Mayor matters. There are so many exceptional community and business leaders in Winnipeg today who could serve with honour as Mayor. I’m providing two years advance notice of my plans not to run again so that our community can, with the benefit of time, elect the best possible person to serve as Winnipeg’s 44th Mayor.

It is my hope that Winnipeggers will elect a new Mayor in 2022 that has the integrity and work ethic needed in the Office of the Mayor.

In my view, elected officials should be more concerned about the needs of our community and next generation than the next election. And I want Winnipeggers to know that now, especially during the pandemic, my continued focus will remain on them.

We have some big issues affecting our community right now and over the coming years. In particular, helping our community weather the storm during the pandemic will remain my top priority. And, as this storm passes, we will once again better focus on building our city for a million people strong.

When we near the end of this term, and my time in public office, we can all better reflect on how our city has moved forward and the challenges ahead. But that time is not today. For there’s much more work to do today and over the next two years.”
