The temple is an epitome of faith and devotion, and the magnificent, gold-adorned idol of Lord Ganesha—revered as 'Dagdusheth Shrimant'—is one of the most beloved and famous deities in all of Maharashtra.

The history of this great Ganesh temple is rooted in a personal tragedy. It was established in the late 19th century by the wealthy sweet seller, Dagdusheth Halwai, and his wife Lakshmibai, following the loss of their only son to the plague epidemic. Guided by their guru, they built the temple as a source of solace and devotion.

Later, freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak popularised the Ganesh festival as a public celebration (Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav) to unite people against the British Raj, and the Shreemanth became a central pillar of this movement, cementing its place in the city's heart.
