Confessions from a huge lover of dryer sheets. Before I started using Brio Living wool dryer balls, my questions were: What are wool dryer balls and how do dryer balls work?

I just was like everybody else, and I figured dryer sheets are sold in the store, they're safe, we're good to go. It's not until I did my homework, and realized that 80,000 plus new chemicals have been introduced into the United States since the 70s, and only a handful of them have been tested.

So one thing that's in our home that is unbelievably toxic are our dryer sheets, and I loved my dryer sheets. I just loved loved loved the smell. The more you could smell me when I walked into the room, my clothes, the better, and then I realized what it's made up of, and then what it actually does, and then I was grossed out. It's made up of all kinds of funky stuff, and chemicals harmful to me and my family, and among other things, dryer sheets contain animal fat. So when it heats up in your dryer, the animal fat, the artificial fragrance, the toxins, everything, kind of loosens up, and then transfers onto your clothes. What's on your clothes is touching your skin. What's touching your skin then gets absorbed into your blood system. Yikes! No wonder there’s more people experiencing health problems and allergies more than ever.

So wool dryer balls, what these will do is, they replace the fabric softener and the dryer sheets you were using before. They are handmade with one hundred percent New Zealand wool to the core, so as safe as safe can be. These will reduce your drying time by 10 -25 minutes per load so you save lots of money on energy bills and you can reduce your heating temperature so you're saving money there too. You are paying maybe a few cents a load, whereas those fabric softeners, they get expensive after a while. Anyway, so saving money, and then saving your clothes as well, because fabric softeners break down the fibers in your clothes. How long do dryer balls last? At least a few years or more. I’ve had mine for a year and a half and they are as good as when I got them! Do plastic dryer balls work? I’ve tried both and I have to say I really like wool dryer balls better because they're 100% natural, dry clothes faster and they are not very loud compared to tennis balls (which I've used too) and plastic nubby balls.

How to use wool dryer balls ? So you put them in the dryer, I say the more balls the better, so I typically will have six of them going around in my laundry. You toss them in, set drying time less than you normally do or use your moisture sensitive setting. They’ll make a gentle thumping noise as they get all mixed up, lifting and fluffing your clothes and you're good to go. Clothes come out so soft, no static and few wrinkles if any wrinkles at all. A few times mine had wrinkles, because I've left them in the dryer longer than they need to be, because I forget, and they cool down. So, my lesson... not to forget to take your laundry out right after the cycle is finished.

But anyway, they do get rid of wrinkles, and reduce static electricity because the wool balls create humidity in the dryer. Humidity eliminates static, so I mean, win-win. How to scent dryer balls? You can get a high-grade essential oil, dab a few drops on each ball, let it soak in, toss them in the dryer, and aromatherapy right there, coming out of your dryer. Ahhhhh a natural fragrance. I use the lavender scent and my sheets and towels smell divine.
