Hi all, I have created a vlog style travel video from Kiruna to give you a glimpse of how Kiruna looks in January. What you can expect.
Ive also made a video abiut the sleeper train SJ93 and the ice hotel.
Kiruna is a town in the far north of Swedish Lapland. It’s known for the huge LKAB iron ore mine and its underground visitors center with an exhibit on mining. Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården, the 19th-century former home of LKAB’s first managing director, is now a museum with a courtyard photography exhibit. Kiruna Church is notable for its bell tower and resemblance to the traditional huts of the indigenous Sámi people.
The municipality of Kiruna is larger than 50 of the countries in the world. It's home to the world's largest underground iron-ore mine, opened in 1898 and still in use. Kiruna is progressively being shifted eastwards, away from land affected by mining.
Kiruna is a special place in many ways. Sweden’s northernmost town is home to Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, to Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise, and to the world’s largest underground iron ore mine – a mine that is now forcing the town to move. Situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna enjoys around two months of midnight sun in summer and ideal conditions for viewing the magical northern lights from September through March. Aurora Sky Station in Abisko in Kiruna municipality has been named by Lonely Planet as the best place in the world to experience light phenomena.
While Kiruna is a relatively small town with a population of around 23,000, the municipality encompasses an area of 19,447 square kilometres, which makes it the second largest municipality in the world. Kiruna’s border to the west is Sweden’s national border with Norway, and its eastern border is the country’s national border with Finland. In the north, all three countries meet at Treriksröset – the Three-Country Cairn, which is the world’s northernmost tripoint and a landmark on the international Nordkalottleden Trail.
Kiruna (Swedish: [ˈkǐːrʉna];[2] Northern Sami: Giron [ˈkiron]; Finnish: Kiiruna [ˈkiːrunɑ]; Meänkieli: Kieruna) is the northernmost city in Sweden, situated in the province of Lapland. It had 17,002 inhabitants in 2016[3] and is the seat of Kiruna Municipality (population: 23,167 in 2016)[4] in Norrbotten County. The city was originally built in the 1890s to serve the Kiruna Mine.
