Hailing from Bélédougou, Mali, Mariam Bagayoko is a singer, dancer, and instrumentalist whose work has carried Mali’s musical traditions across generations and social boundaries. Affectionately called the “Nightingale of Bélédougou,” her artistry is rooted in the Bambara vocal tradition, animated by her mastery of the yabara, and made unmistakable by her powerful balafon dance.
For a lifetime devoted to preserving, transmitting, and renewing Mali’s musical heritage, Mariam Bagayoko is the deserving winner of the AKMA 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award.
