Residents of Villa Nizao have only remote access to a contaminated water supply, the multi-purpose Nizaito River. With only a bucket to carry the dirty water home for cleaning, cooking, and drinking, the family member who makes the journey to the river must leave behind chores and children, not always an easy task in itself.
Hope is on the way - by a team of 3 Rotary International Clubs, Dominican-based nonprofit organization Instituto Dominicano de Desarollo Integral (IDDI), and US-based nonprofit organization Sustainable Empowerment Network, Inc. (SENI). These organizations are collaborating on a Rotary International Global Grant to fund Phase I of a water and sanitation project for 170 families in and surrounding Villa Nizao. The design and implementation has been approved by the Dominican government water and sewerage association INAPA.
This project keeps sustainability at the forefront. Community members comprise committees to learn about clean water use and importance, hygiene, system construction and maintenance, financial management, and conflict resolution.
This video was produced in the Dominican Republic and we offer our great gratitude to the producer and the team members of IDDI.
