It would take only the most deliberately uncurious person not to notice the massive strides China has taken in its economic development, but as my guest for Episode 3 of Shy Guy Talks has noticed, the country (that we both love and are fascinated by, by the way) hasn’t had in parallel an increase in “cultural freedom.” What is that? Well, as it turns out, freedom doesn’t simply lie in the ability to open a coffee shop, but who we can be. But, how can we talk about that without becoming the proverbial “coloniser”? God knows there’s enough westerners who think they know how to make China better!
This is the topic of my conversation with Landry Harmon, who is an American artist, writer, and collaborator with Thaddeus Russell at Renegade University. The topic is freedom, especially in relation to China (Landry spent some time as a student in Beijing, and plans to return to China), but also as a corrective to the collapse in cultural conversation in the West.
It truly is thrilling conversing with someone with whom you share similar outlooks, but is also highly knowledgeable. I hope this is conveyed sufficiently through our talk, and you share in our excitement.
You may notice there’s some strange cuts at the beginning of this episode - this is because we had some problems with the recording platform, and eventually we had to change to a different one. This also explains why in the video version it changes from the side-by-side view.

I know a lot of you are eagerly awaiting border restrictions to ease up so you can go travelling again. And, all this talk about China and how cool it is might be further wetting your appetite. It’s one of those things, isn’t it, being prohibited from doing something makes you want to do it more! That still leaves the question of: where, why, how, and with whom?
That’s where The Shy Guy’s Guide to Travelling comes in. This is a book for anyone who wants to go travelling, but feels like there are insurmountable obstacles that prevent them - whether physical or psychic. My book firstly tells you why you want to go travelling - and the answer is, because it’s good for you in ways that you could not possibly have expected before you got on the plane. I explore all of these ways. Then, I show you how you can overcome these aforementioned obstacles.
Amazon reviewers for The Shy Guy’s Guide to Travelling say: “A must read for first-time travellers.” “An inspiring read.”“One of the most inspiring books I have ever had the pleasure of reading.”
