Not all Biharis speak bhojpuri. This is Day 4 of series Decoding Bihar.
This episode is all about Languages of Bihar.
People think Bihar means only Bhojpuri.
But in reality, Bihar speaks four major languages:
Maithili – Spoken in north-east Bihar like Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi.
It was added to the Constitution’s 8th Schedule in 2003.
Bhojpuri – Spoken in western Bihar like Saran, Siwan, Buxar, and beyond — even in Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji.
(Not officially recognised yet.)
Magahi – Spoken in south-central Bihar like Gaya, Nalanda, Jehanabad.
It traces roots to Pali and Prakrit – languages used in Buddha’s teachings.
Angika – Spoken in eastern Bihar like Bhagalpur, Munger, Katihar.
Its base links to Vajjika and Magahi.
Bihar’s official state languages are Hindi and Urdu. Only Maithili has national constitutional status. Others are regional but deeply rooted.
