India's trade deficit widened to $34.6 billion in January, the largest in three months. This was due to a significant increase in gold and silver imports, pushing up the import bill. Meanwhile, a significant decline in exports to the United States kept total exports largely stable. India's imports rose 19.1% to $71.2 billion in January, the largest increase since last April and the second-highest for any month. Gold imports increased 4.5 times to $12 billion, while silver imports increased 2.3 times to $2 billion. Gems and jewelry and textile exports declined during January. However, the electronics and pharmaceutical sectors saw slight growth. Despite this, total exports increased by 0.8% to $36.6 billion. Watch this video for more details.
