Описание: Face Changing (Bian Lian) is the most iconic subgenre of Sichuan Opera, an ancient dramatic art form centered in Chengdu. Known for its "magical" quality, performers change multiple brightly colored masks almost instantaneously with a flick of the head or a sweep of the hand.
Core Techniques
Traditionally a closely guarded secret, face-changing uses three primary methods to switch masks:
Pulling (Che Lian): The most complex method, where silk masks are manipulated by hidden silk threads and wires attached to the performer’s costume.
Blowing (Mo Lian): The performer blows into a hidden box of colored powder that settles on the face to change its color.
Plastering (Mo Lian): The performer spreads concealed greasepaint across their face to alter their appearance.

Performances are often "variety shows" that include fire-spitting, shadow puppetry, and "rolling lanterns".

Emotions: Mask colors signify character traits—red for loyalty, black for integrity, and white for treachery.
Evolution: Modern masters can now change between 18 to 20 masks in a single performance, including modern additions like panda faces.
Inclusivity: While once restricted to males, the art has been taught to women since the late 1990s.
