Описание: Tariacuri is one of the earliest Purhepecha stories recorded in the Relacíon de Michoacan, corresponding to the 42nd illustration of the codex. The Relación comprise of stories told by the elite of Tarascan society to the Spanish and was written around 1540. The precise identity of the author is unknown but it is believed to have been written by a Franciscan friar, Jerónmio de Alcalá. It is one of the few remaining historical documents that offers a picture of the pre-hispanic world of the Purhepechas, who now live exclusively in the estate of Michoacan in west central Mexico and number roughly 117,000 according to the Mexican census. The following story, about the changes that were predicted with the arrival of the Spanish, was translated back into Purhepecha with the help of Rosalba Martínez, a native speaker from Azajo. The recording and video were produced by Lluvia-Camacho Cervantes (ELA, CUNY GC) as part of her ongoing fieldwork on Purhepecha.
