Solothurn (432 m ü. M.) ist die Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Kantons am Jurasüdfuss. Die «schönste Barockstadt» der Schweiz verfügt über einen mittelalterlichen Stadtkern. Das Wahrzeichen von Solothurn ist die St. Ursenkathedrale. Diese überragt mit ihrem mächtigen Hochaltar und dem 66 m hohen Zwiebelturm die Altstadt. Der helle Jurakalk (auch Solothurner Marmor genannt) hebt das bedeutende frühklassizistische Gebäude auch farblich hervor.

Aus unerfindlichen Gründen hat Solothurn seit dem Mittelalter eine besondere Beziehung zur Zahl 11 entwickelt. In der Stadt finden sich zahlreiche Zeugnisse dieser Zahl. So verfügt die Kathedrale über elf Glocken sowie elf Altäre. Die elfte, schwarz gestrichene Bodenplatte im Hauptschiff liegt genau so, dass von diesem Standort alle elf Altäre gleichzeitig einsehbar sind. Es existieren viele, zum Teil mystische Beispiele mehr.

Mitten durch die Stadt fliesst die Aare. Sie ist der längste Fluss auf Schweizer Boden und der grösste Rheinzufluss überhaupt.


Solothurn (432 m above sea level) is the capital of the canton of the same name at the southern foot of the Jura. Dubbed the «most beautiful Baroque city» of Switzerland, it has a medieval city center. The landmark of Solothurn is St. Ursen Cathedral. With its majestic high altar and the 66-m-high onion-domed tower, it towers above the old town. The pale Jura limestone (also called «Solothurn marble») also serves to highlight this important neo-Classical building in terms of color.

For some mysterious reason, Solothurn has formed a special attachment to the number 11 since the Middle Ages. Occurrences of this number can be found all over the city. For instance, the cathedral has eleven bells as well as eleven altars. The eleventh floor panel in the main aisle, painted black, is situated in such a way that all eleven altars can be seen at once from there. There are many more examples, some of them mystical.

The Aar flows right through the city. It is the longest river on Swiss territory and the largest feeding river of the Rhine altogether.
