According to Lebanese analyst Rami Naim, the country is no longer debating politics. It is confronting an existential choice between sovereignty and submission.
One camp is pushing for stability, state authority, and real efforts to prevent another catastrophic war. It is working through Lebanon’s institutions and constitution, even signaling openness to negotiations to protect the country from collapse.
The other camp is Hezbollah.
Aligned directly with Iran, Hezbollah rejects peace, rejects negotiations, and rejects disarmament. It has openly threatened civil war if the Lebanese state or army attempts to reclaim control over its weapons. Its loyalty, Naim warns, is not to Lebanon, but to Tehran.
Many Lebanese now see Hezbollah’s arsenal not as protection, but as a weapon turned inward. These arms have devastated the economy, fueled endless wars, silenced opposition, and pushed Lebanon closer to becoming a pawn in Iran’s regional project.
Naim argues that unless Hezbollah is disarmed, Lebanon’s future will continue to be dictated from outside its borders.
