Mudit Dandwate, co-founder and CEO of medtech startup Dozee, was out with his two dogs Potato and Pi when he had a near-death experience. Potato, a lover of water, leapt into a nearby lake for a swim. This wasn't uncommon behavior, especially considering that Potato is a Labrador. What was uncommon, however, was Potato's panicked barking and splashing soon after entering into the lake. Worried about his dog's wellbeing, Mudit jumped into the lake and swam out towards Potato. What he didn't realize was that something else was also swimming towards Potato. Mudit felt a sharp pain in his left arm, and was subsequently dragged underwater. He was being attacked by a crocodile. This attack only lasted for a few seconds, but it changed Mudit's life forever.

Mudit Dandwat took his first step towards entrepreneurship while studying at IIT Bombay. There, he got an opportunity to design race cars and a cricket bat. These experiences taught Mudit a lot about engineering, but they also taught him skills like people management and meeting deadlines.
After graduating from IITB, Mudit went on to work as a software engineer at a company called Altair. Things were going well for Mudit, but he realized that the work he was doing wasn't impacting the world in a meaningful way. Knowing that he would be able to make this positive impact much more easily as an entrepreneur than as an employee, Mudit quit his job and founded a medtech startup. Medtech helps people. It prolongs lives. This was the kind of impact that Mudit wanted to have on the world, and so he and his co-founders got to work.
It took two years for Mudit and his startup to build a stable product, which they called Dozee. Dozee is a contactless health monitor which, when placed beneath a mattress, is able to monitor things like heart health, respiration, sleep quality, and stress. You or a loved on can view and analyze this data after waking up.
At that point in his life, life as an entrepreneur had Mudit feeling pretty stressed, and so on June 25, 2017, he decided to take his to the outskirts of the city to play. He had no idea that this outing would become a nightmarish near-death experience, and that he would lose his arm to it. After swimming into a lake to rescue his panicked dog, Mudit found himself being attacked by a crocodile. Mudit had a choice to make: die, or become an amputee. By twisting his body to intentionally break his arm, allowing the crocodile to rip it off, Mudit was able to escape. He swam to shore and asked two strangers to drive him to the nearest hospital.
Re-learning how to live life after losing a limb is, for most people, an arduous process. Mudit hasn't allowed his disability to slow him down though. He was back at work within a week of the crocodile attack, and the first order of business was to build a new arm for himself. He now has a custom-built carbon-fibre myoelectric prosthetic arm.
It has been two years since Mudit's near-death experience, and he couldn't ask for a better life as an amputee in India, a country where disability often goes hand in hand with stigma-borne social exclusion. He is surrounded by friends, he is the CEO of a successful medtech startup, and most importantly, he is using his skills as an engineer and entrepreneur to help people.
