The Veli Vir waterfall was created as a result of the erosion of the river Reka, which flows through the valley below the village of Sokoliči. Its exact age is unknown, but it is believed to have formed in the Pleistocene, more than 10,000 years ago.
In the past, the waterfall was not as accessible as it is today. There were only poorly maintained paths leading to it, which were known only to the locals. It was only in the 20th century that hikers and tourists began to visit it. In the 1970s, they arranged a path to the waterfall, which is still popular among tourists today.
Veli Vir waterfall was not always known by this name. In the past, it was also called Little Močilnik or Močilnik pri Sokolici. The current name Veli Vir came into being in the 20th century and refers to the strong source of water that feeds the waterfall.
In addition to its natural beauty, the Veli Vir waterfall is also important as a cultural monument. Near the waterfall are the remains of an old sawmill that operated in the 19th century. The sawmill was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, and today only its ruins are visible.
Today, the Veli Vir waterfall is a popular destination for day trips. It offers beautiful nature, the possibility of walks and picnics, and a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
