Hallucinations as Adaptation: Explaining Out-of-Body Experiences, Autoscopy, and Doppelgangers

Out-of-body experiences, seeing oneself like a ghost, doppelgangers, feeling but not seeing the presence of another---these disturbing encounters haunt mythology and folklore and are based in actual experiences. Why do these strange experiences occur? What can they tell us about how the human psyche operates and how it has changed through history? Relying on recent research that examines complex hallucinatory reduplications of one’s own body, I explore how explaining autoscopy and he-autoscopy as a failure to neurologically integrate inputs is inadequate. Instead, I argue that these experiences are reactivations of vestigial bicameral structures. Understanding them aids us in appreciating the hallucinatory nature of subjective inner visualizations. Building upon the discussion in the podcast “Hallucinations as Adaptation---Part 1,” we continue to explore a Jaynesian interpretation of hallucinations, vestigial bicamerality, and other anomalous psychological experiences.
